Strategies for land-bird conservation on Mauritius

Article Abstract:

Conservation of threatened native land birds on Mauritius may be best accomplished by using exotic plants to enhance the mainland habitat. Rehabilitating the native vegetation is not necessarily the most effective strategy, as use of exotic plants would allow habitat management to cover a wider area at lower cost. For example, exotic Cryptomeria groves, already established as plantation species on Mauritius, provide good protection for nests. A third strategy, marooning the birds on nearby islets, would make them vulnerable to catastrophes.

Use of Traditional Ecological Knowledge in Marine Conservation

Article Abstract:

Examples of using traditional ecological knowledge in marine conservation include species knowledge for Kiribati conservation policy, folk taxonomy for Micronesia policy, and knowledge of ecological interactions for Belize fishery reserve design. Additional benefits of traditional - governmental exchanges are also discussed.
