Strengthening biomedicine's roots

Article Abstract:

There are new opportunities for curing disease following breakthroughs in molecular science. Around 20 genomes have already been sequenced, with many more in progress including the human genome. However costs have accelerated and the challenge now is to circumvent the costs via high-throughput methods, computational methods, more synchrotron beam lines, phasing methods and higher-field superconducting magnetics.

A P-type ATPase required for rice blast disease and induction of host resistance

Article Abstract:

The characterization of a P-type ATPase-encoding gene, MgAPT2, in the economically important rice blast pathogen Magnaporthe grisea is reported which is required for exocytosis during plant infection. MgAPT2 is required for both foliar and root infection by the fungus, and for the rapid induction of host defence response in an incompatible reaction.
