US and Europe may link up planned arrays

Article Abstract:

Astronomers from the US and Europe have agreed that they will go ahead with plans to merge the US Millimeter Array and the planned European Large Southern Array. It has been decided that the array would be situated at the Chajnantor site in the Atacama Desert in Chile. A common approach has been agreed for the scheme, which will cost around $400 million. However, it will still be necessary to develop a design strategy which is acceptable to both sides.

Success prompts bid for second Neurolab launch

Article Abstract:

A second flight for the Neurolab space shuttle mission is expected to be approved by US space officials. The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) believes that a second flight would be worthwhile scientifically, and is in discussion with other participants from Europe, Japan and Canada, about how the cost of the flight will be split. The Spacelab module is to be reflown using the same laboratory equipment and core crew of astronauts.

Mir's problems could mean scale-down for science

Article Abstract:

Some observers are beginning to express doubts about the role of the Mir space station as a long-term research platform. The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) believes that 80% of the original scientific goals for the station's research programme are still achievable, despite considerable technical difficulties. However, there are a number of problems which may further cut scientific work aboard Mir.
