Superalliance of bottlenose dolphins

Article Abstract:

Male bottlenose dolphins at Shark Bay, Western Australia were found to make two levels of alliance in a social network of over 400 individuals.Highly labile alliances were formed by 14 of the males, instead of the more typical stable alliances. Teams of two stable alliances were observed to cooperate as second-order alliances in certain circumstances. The alliances in the superalliance were highly labile and could provide a mechanism for maintaining affiliative bonds by males.
