Sustained firing in auditory cortex evoked by preferred stimuli

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to show that single neutrons in both primary and lateral belt areas of the auditory cortex of awake marmoset monkeys are capable of firing in a sustained manner over a prolonged period of time, when driven by preferred stimuli. The findings suggest that when the auditory cortex is stimulated by a sound, a particular population of neurons fire maximally throughout the duration of the sound.

The neuronal representation of pitch in primate auditory cortex

Article Abstract:

The existence of neurons in the auditory cortex of marmoset monkeys that respond to both pure tones and missing fundamental harmonic complex sounds with the same fundamental frequency, providing a neural correlate for pitch constancy is described. These pitch-selective neurons are located in a restricted low-frequency cortical region near the anterolateral border of the primary auditory cortex.

Sound of silence activates auditory cortex

Article Abstract:

Functional magnetic resonance imaging is used to investigate the recruitment of auditory cortex during spontaneous auditory imagery of excerpts of popular music. Results reveal that silent gaps embedded in familiar songs induced greater activation in auditory association areas than did silent gaps embedded in unknown songs
