The commercial harvest of wildlife in Dornod Aimag, Alaska

Article Abstract:

The sparsely-populated Dornod province of eastern Mongolia is home to several unique species, some of which have been commercially harvested by state-operated hunting groups. The free market has removed constraints on harvest figures, although they are still recorded. A new study attempts to identify wildlife population trends using the commercial harvest figures for gray wolves, Mongolian gazelle, red foxes, Tolai rabbits, corsac foxes and Siberian marmots. The study reveals that polecat and rabbit populations show no significant trends, although populations of gazelles, marmots and wolves are declining.

Attributes of black-tailed prairie dog colonies in Northcentral Montana

Article Abstract:

Researchers analysed the features of black-tailed prairie dog colonies in Montana. The information which they gathered on preferred habitats could be used in the management of prairie dog populations or when considering the re-introduction of black-footed ferrets. The researchers used a geographic information system and found that black-tailed prairie dog colony locations were characterized by southerly aspects and areas with small slopes. They were more prevalent on clay-loam and loam soils, and distance to the nearest road had no significant influence on colony location or animal density.
