The importance of coherent defence strategies

Article Abstract:

European astronomers could threaten their future by unduly criticizing the European Space Agency (ESA). The claim that the ESA can follow the example of the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) by introducing cost-saving and streamlining measures is doubtful. NASA's methods are unproven and its ability to develop cost-effective science remains untried. The ESA's Horizon 2000 program is a flexible and stable package that has long been envied by NASA, but the need for European nations to cut budgets means that its long-term visions are not achievable and new thinking is needed.

Will Europe be lost in space?

Article Abstract:

Member states of the European Space Agency (ESA) are using the agency to cater to European industrial policy in return for their monetary contributions to the agency. Despite their credibility and prospects, the ESA programs have been unable to record progress as the governments sponsoring its projects expect to establish contracts between ESA and national industrial companies. Members should understand the significance of ESA's latest Horizon 2000+ program and finance it without trying to improve their own prospects.

European space science braces for mission cuts

Article Abstract:

The European Space Agency's (ESA) plans to announce a reduction in spending on space science programmes in an effort to reduce costs. The plans to upgrade the Hubble Space Telescope and to operate satellites beyond their lifetimes are uncertain. The head of science at ESA believes that such cuts will jeopardize science programs such as Horizon 2000. Others feel that such cuts are necessary as ESA's budget is already overstretched. Speculations over further cuts in the future are also discussed.
