The neural correlates of the verbal component of working memory

Article Abstract:

The articulatory loop consists of a phonological store, which is involved in short-term memory for letters, and a subvocal rehearsal system, which is engaged during rhyming decisions. These components of the articulatory loop were mapped by monitoring the the regional cerebral blood flow during phonological storage and rhyming judgement using positron emission tomography. The results showed that the phonological store is located at the left supramarginal gyrus. On the other hand, the subvocal rehearsal system was localized to the Broca's area.

Mechanisms for memory types differ

Article Abstract:

Memory researchers have long questioned whether short-term memory is a necessary step in the formation of long-term memory. A new study on the brains of rats investigates whether long-term and short-term memory are separate mechanisms. Four treatments that alter long-term memory are found to have no effect on short-term memory, suggesting that such processes are essentially different mechanisms.

The cerebellar symphony

Article Abstract:

Inferior olive located in the cerebellum is responsible for coordinating cerebellar activity for performing various well-orchestrated functions as revealed by results achieved during studies of rats. Results suggest that continuous reorganization of inferior olivary cells into different subgroups of neurons coordinated on a carrier wave occurs during performance of well-orchestrated functions.
