The free Internet tool Google Earth virtual globe has opened the eyes of millions to the possibilities of digital geography and the sight of their house from above. By offering researchers an easy way into Geographic Information Systems software, Google Earth and other virtual globes are set to go beyond representing the world, and start changing it.

Who will pay for open access?

Universities are hesitant to fund open-access papers while still paying for library subscriptions. The Public Library of Science made it possible for people all over the world to have access to the latest scientific discoveries.
