Three planets for Upsilon Andromedae

Article Abstract:

There are three massive planets orbiting the star Upsilon Andromedae, according to research using data obtained at the Lick Observatory in California and by the Advanced Fibre-Optic Echelle spectrometer at the Whipple Telescope in Arizona. The innermost planet, which was first discovered in 1997, has an almost circular orbit with a period of 4.6 days. The middle planet has a period of around 242 days and a mass around twice that of Jupiter. The orbital period of the outer planet is around 1,270 days, while its orbital eccentricity is around 0.36.

How common are habitable planets?

Article Abstract:

The question of humanity's place in the Universe has been approached from many different viewpoints, leading to widely diverse answers. Life on Earth has evolved and thrived due to billions of years of benign climate. Carbon dioxide cycles between the atmosphere, the oceans, living organisms, fossil fuels and carbonate rocks. Stars are observed to be forming within cold areas of the Galaxy, but there is not sufficient data at present to determine the range of planetary systems that occur in nature.

Time for gas planets to grow

Article Abstract:

Giant planets, such as Jupiter, need a large gas supply to grow to full size. New research shows that such planets formed on timescales of up to 20 million years, not the few million years as previously thought.
