Triggering of volcanic eruptions

Article Abstract:

Major mantle and tectonic plate motions can result in both volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, but the two events have not generally been seen to be related. Some studies have proposed a link between earthquakes and eruptions, and an examination of the history of earthquakes shows that more volcanic eruptions occur in the day or two afterwards that one might expect. Volcanoes can also erupt at the same time, though they may be separated by several hundred kilometers. These eruptions could be triggered by a single earthquake.

A slow earthquake sequence on the San Andreas fault

Article Abstract:

A slow earthquake sequence that was as complex as regular earthquakes and lasted for one week occurred at the San Andreas fault, California, in Dec 1992. The occurrence of the slow strain event doubles the observed timescale for such events. The largest earthquakes related to these slow events are small. The events produce very little strain release. This indicate a relationship between the earthquake size and the amount of slow redistribution of stress.

Annual modulation of triggered seismicity following the 1992 Landers earthquake in California

Article Abstract:

Research describing the triggered seismic activity after the Landers, California, earthquake on 28 June 1992 is presented. It is found that this earthquake was responsible for long-term physical changes.
