Tuning bilayer twist using chiral counterions

Article Abstract:

Cationic gemini surfactants with chiral counterions such as L-tartrate form gels by developing extended networks of multilamellar twisted ribbons. The chirality comes from the counterion, rather than from the amphiphile. Similar structures are found for diacetylenic lipids, glutamates and bile. The helical ribbons are unstable, evolving into tubules. Twisted ribbons have a curvature that differs from cylindrical curvature of helical ribbons, and no evolution towards closed chiral aggregates was observed. The twisted ribbons may be stable and the chirality can be continuously varied.

Nonlinear elasticity in biological gels

Article Abstract:

A molecular theory that accounts for strain-stiffening in a range of molecularly distinct gels formed from cytoskeletal and extracellular proteins is described. This theory shows that systems of filamentous proteins arranged in an open crosslinked mesh invariably stiffen at low strains without requiring a specific architecture.

High-resolution, high-sensitivity NMR of nanolitre anisotropic samples by coil spinning

Article Abstract:

The inductive coupling allows the wireless transmission of radio-frequency pulses and hence makes the high-resolution NMR measurements of nanolitre anisotropic measurements possible. The measurements were found to be done by the fast spinning of both detector coil, as well as the sample.
