Turning off folicular dendritic cells

Article Abstract:

Follicular dendritic cells (FDCs) display intact antigens for B cell recognition. It is shown that if lymphotoxin alpha/beta (LTalpha/beta) is inhibited, multiple markers on FDCs disappear within one day. The spleens of normal adult mice treated with LTbetaR-Ig or anti-LTbeta anitbody were examined. Inhibition of TNF or LT pathways in non-immunized mice results int the disappearance of FDC-specific markets. TNF and LTalpha/beta axes were found to vary in their effects on the function of a fully developed system.

Niche retreats for stem cells

Article Abstract:

A study reports convincing evidence from two different models that CD44, a cell-surface receptor that mediates cell-cell contacts helps the cells that give rise to leukaemia to engraft in the bone marrow. It is seen that the normal cells that give rise to blood in the bone marrow do not apparently rely to the same extent on this receptor for their function, thereby suggesting that CD44 might be a therapeutic target for leukaemia.

Regulation of B-cell survival by BAFF-dependent PKCDelta-mediated nuclear signalling

Article Abstract:

Approximately 65% of B cells generated in human bone marrow are potentially harmful auto reactive B cells. Most of these cells are clonally deleted in the bone marrow, while those auto reactive B cells that escape to the periphery are energized or perish before becoming mature B cells. Data suggest the existence of a previously unknown BAFF-induced and PKC -mediated nuclear signaling pathway, which regulates B-cell survival.
