US environment projects may merge efforts

Article Abstract:

The National Science and Technology Council's Committee on the Environment and Natural Resources plans to link several of the federal environmental programs into a single coordinated network. This policy will ensure data compatibility among the programs and will lead to better utilization of its investment. Many data sites need modifications to collect additional data including remote-sensing which will have to be made user-friendly. The problem-ridden Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program and the now disbanded National Biological Service would be part of the network.

Cuts force telescope closures at Kitt Peak

Article Abstract:

Operation of two of the five remaining night-time telescopes at the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona will be phased out over a year in order to reduce operations costs by around $300,000 a year. This decision will also have the effect of permitting staff to focus more closely on the 4-mt-class Mayall and WIYN telescopes and a 2.1-mt telescope. National Optical Astronomy Observatories Director Sidney Wolff has stated that she would oppose any plans to close Kitt Peak's last three night-time telescopes.
