Xenotransplant experts face good and bad news

Article Abstract:

Research is producing mixed results about whether transplanting animal organs into humans is safe. One study indicates that a form of a pig retrovirus previously believed to be safe can infect human cells, while a different study has reported promising results from treating patients with living pig tissue. In the UK, the Secretary of State for Health is to decide on each application for a human trial of an organ transplant, based on advice from the UK Xenotransplantation Interim Regulatory Authority. In the US, the Food and Drug Administration will publish guidelines on xenotransplantation in autumn 1998.
