Unproductive splicing of SR genes associated with highly conserved and ultraconserved DNA elements

Article Abstract:

Researchers demonstrated that in every member of the human SR family of splicing regulators, highly or ultraconserved elements are alternatively spliced, either as alternative 'poison cassette exons' containing early in-frame stop codons, or as alternative introns in the 3' untranslated region. Results show that unproductive splicing associated with conserved regions has arisen independently in different SR genes, which suggests that splicing factors may readily acquire this form of regulation.

Repression of the human dihydrofolate reductase gene by a non-coding interfering transcript

Article Abstract:

The transcriptional repression of the gene encoding dihydrofolate reductase has depended on a non-coding transcript initiated from the upstream minor promoter and has involved both the direct interaction of the RNA and promoter-specific interference. The findings show that the regulatory transcript produced from the minor promoter has an important function in an epigenetic mechanism of promoter-specific transcriptional repression.

Distinct physiological states of Plasmodium falciparum in malaria-infected patients

Article Abstract:

The various physiological states of Plasmodium falciparum, as observed in malaria-infected patients are explained. The variations in the states are found to also affect the manifestations and the treatment of the disease.
