Unusual sugar biosynthesis and natural product glycodiversification

Article Abstract:

Some of the strategies used by sugar biosynthetic enzymes to generate carbohydrate structures and alter the sugar components of natural products are demonstrated. The power, elegance and utility of nature's biosynthetic machinery has ushered in a new era of carbohydrate research that has ensured a promising future for natural product glycodiversification in the search for new and improved drugs.

Structural insight into antibiotic fosfomycin biosynthesis by a mononuclear iron enzyme

Article Abstract:

The first crystal structures of (S)-hydroxypropylphosphonic acid epoxidase (HppE), a representative of a new family of mononuclear iron enzymes is presented. The way this enzyme is specifically tuned to facilitate the unusual radical-mediated epoxidation reaction found in the pathway of fosfomycin biosynthesis is discussed.

Crystal structure of the non-haem iron halogenase SyrB2 in syringomycin biosynthesis

Article Abstract:

The structure of SyrB2 with both a chloride ion and alphaKG coordinated to the iron ion at 1.6A resolution is reported. This structure reveals a previously unknown coordination of iron, in which the carboxylate ligand of the facial triad is replaced by a chloride ion.
