Visibility bias on counts of nesting Canada geese

Article Abstract:

Researchers used double-count methods to establish any visibility bias in population estimates of Canada geese in northern Manitoba. Researchers have traditionally assumed that single ground counts of nesting Canada geese produce virtually complete inventories, due to the sparse cover and high visibility in the arctic nesting sites. The double-count survey conducted in 1993-4 revealed that the individual surveys had located only 77% of active nests and 39% of destroyed nests. The researchers recommend the estimation of visibility bias where accurate population estimates are required.

Macrohabitat effects on summer survival, movements, and clutch success of northern bobwhite in Kansas

Article Abstract:

The declining trend in northern bobcat populations has been attributed to land use changes and intensified agricultural practices. Little data exists on the link between habitat attributes and bobcat survival and productivity. A new study compares clutch success, survival and home range size of marked bobwhite during summer between two areas of Kansas with different habitat attributes. The study finds similar clutch success, female survival and female movements in both study areas, but habitat seems to influence male-linked parameters that could indirectly affect productivity.

Measurements of Canada goose morphology - sources of error and effects on classification of subspecies

Article Abstract:

A critique is presented on the use of physical measurements to classify subspecies of Canada geese, its efficacy and the types of errors resulting in misclassifications. The article compares bias and error counts between observers with different levels of experience.
