Visual projection map specified by topographic expression of transcription factors in the retina

Article Abstract:

Misexpression of two transcriptional regulators, topographically expressed along the nasotemporal axis in the embryonic chicken retina, leads to misprojection on the tectum along the rostrocaudal axis. These regulators belong to the winged-helix family, and their topographical expression determines the formation of the retinotectal map. This evidence supports the chemoaffinity theory, according to which, topographical arrangement of molecules determines the orderly retinotectal projection.

A synaptic laminin-calcium channel interaction organizes active zones in motor nerve terminals

Article Abstract:

The study presents laminin beta2, a component of the synaptic cleft at the neuromuscular junction, binds directly to calcium channels that are required for neurotransmitter release from motor nerve terminals. The results identify an extracellular ligand of the voltage-gated calcium channel as well as a new laminin receptor.
