'Whistleblowers face blast of hostility.' (informers of scientific misconduct)

Article Abstract:

Informants who alert authorities to scientific misconduct are finding themselves subjected to more suspicion and investigation from their peers, research administrators and even investigators. Laws intended to protect such 'whistleblowers' still fail to prevent them from the stigma of their actions. They are advised to take precautionary measures, such as showing their information to someone they trust who is at least at a senior position, assessing their actual goal, pinpointing relevant documentation, finding allies and choosing the right person to whom the allegation is to be divulged.

Chile tries to bridge gap in scientific standards

Article Abstract:

Chile's small scientific community is well proportioned with 0.67% of gross domestic product spent on research. The main universities were not disrupted during the military dictatorship and have not had to absorb high numbers of undergraduates. President Eduardo Frei has sought to raise standards in science by focusing resources on the best scientists. However there is a lack of support for graduate students, and there are too many elderly researchers at the country's universities.
