Ecosystem size determines food-chain length in lakes

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the effect of ecosystem size alone, productivity alone or a combination of ecosystem size and productivity on the food-chain lengths which exist in ecological communities in lakes.

Magnitude and patterns of herbivory in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems

Article Abstract:

Herbivory data from 44 aquatic ecosystems were compared with previously obtained herbivory data from terrestrial ecosystems. Herbivory refers to the ingestion but not to the assimilation of plant matter. For both sets of ecosystems, a rise in primary productivity accompanied a concomitant rise in herbivore biomass and herbivory rate. However, water-dwelling herbivores consumed an average of 51% of the yearly plant production while their land-dwelling counterparts consumed only 18%. These resemblances and variations will affect the movement of energy through both ecosystems.

Whole-lake carbon-13 additions reveal terrestrial support of aquatic food webs

Article Abstract:

Manipulation of dissolved inorganic carbon-13 in two lakes was experimented. It was observed that internal primary production is insufficient to support the food webs of the ecosystems.
