Wildlife survival beyond park boundaries: the impact of slash-and-burn agriculture and hunting in mammals in Tambopata, Peru

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that large herbivores, large carnivores, and primates cannot persist in the Amazonian forest multiple-use zones without halting hunting. Highly disturbed agroforests do contain wildlife but along with a suite of adaptable, fast-reproducing species that can survive human activity.

The editorial examines the inflexibility surrounding the term "park," both in the conventionally held beliefs of what defines a park, and the management policies used to govern them. Greater flexibility would allow both human and environmental needs to be met.

Effect of hunting in source-sink systems in the neotropics

Article Abstract:

Information available suggests that dispersal can play a key role in rebuilding animal populations depleted by hunting. Wildlife managers should attempt to regulate harvests and protect unhunted areas.
