Will space-based astronomy give value for money?
Article Abstract:
The high expenditure for space explorations by countries all over the world will be justified by the number of answers available to scientific queries. The improvements in infrared detectors make way for the design of better space telescopes that will enable study of the infrared region. The broad range of spectral coverage will probably give solutions to puzzling problems in astrophysics such as the nature of dark matter and gamma-ray bursts. Launching of a Japanese satellite for Very Long Baseline Interferometry and the design of Next Generation Space Telescope are discussed.

ESO negotiates with Chile over agreement on telescopes
Article Abstract:
The European Southern Observatory (ESO) and Chile conducted talks in June 1993 for the building of the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in the northern Chilean desert. The Chilean astronomers claim that previous negotiations did not give the Chileans adequate viewing time and employment. The ESO claims the instruments will not be properly used. Chilean legislators have demanded 10% viewing time, and there is a possibility that ESO will be reasonable during the June meeting.
