Wza the translocon for E. coli capsular polysaccharides defines a new class of membrane protein

Article Abstract:

The resolution structure of the 340 kDa octamer of Wza, an integral outer membrane lipoprotein, which is essential for group 1 capsule export in Escherichia coli, is described. Wza is open to the extracellular environment but closed to the periplasm and hence a new route and mechanism is proposed for translocation of the capsular polysaccharide.

Enzymes line up for assembly

Article Abstract:

A previously unknown link in one of the biological assembly line is identified that has involved an unexpected approach to common biochemical reactions. The enzymes that have formed the polyketide synthase (PKS) and non-ribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) families are found to be responsible for the biosynthesis of many useful compounds.

Crystal structure and mechanism of a bacterial fluorinating enzyme

Article Abstract:

Streptomyces cattleya can form carbon-fluorine bonds and must therefore have evolved an enzyme able to overcome the chemical challenges of using aqueous fluoride. The sequence and three-dimensional structure of the first native fluorination enzyme, 5'-fluoro-5'-deoxyadenosine synthase, from this organism is reported.
