Modernising Strangeways

Article Abstract:

Strangeways Prison has been rennovated and given additional new buildings following the damage caused in riots in 1990. The Victorian radial cell blocks have been refurbised to create smaller cell units and modern sanitory and security facilities have been added. This has been achieved without compromising the original design. The second part of the work was a new entry building housing prisoners' reception, visiting rooms and offices. This complements the main block and provides an efficient, functional building. Thirdly, new workshops, recreation, kitchen and other service builldings were built on an adjoining site.

Nomads of the high plateau: photographs of Mongolia(Illustration)

Article Abstract:

Mongolians still retain their age old nomadic traditions although the country has witnessed profound changes since it was opened up to the world in 1990. Most Mongolians still practice pastoral nomadism in harsh climatic conditions as their ancestors did centuries ago. The included photographs record the traditional ways of the Mongolians and also the transitions they are going through. Important aspects of Mongolian life such as horses, yaks, cheese, shamans and their semi-permanent tents are captured on film.
