Bridge over the Neretva: the loss of the sixteenth-century bridge at Mostar remains a powerful symbol of a collective heritage destroyed by war
Article Abstract:
Croat militiamen demolished the Stari Most, or Old Bridge, over the Neretva River in Mostar, Bosnia, in Nov 1993. The bridge, built under Ottoman rule in 1566, had come to symbolize the dream of a multicultural Bosnia where Muslims, Roman Catholics, and Orthodox Christians could dwell in peace. Plans have been laid to restore the bridge by 2004.
