Sony Loews West 84th street; Sony Star Southfield
Article Abstract:
Movie theater owners Jim and Barrie Loeks commissioned architect David Rockwell to design two theaters under the ongoing Sony Theaters rehabilitation plan. Rockwell renovated the first, Sony Loews West 84th Street theater, by installing a collage-like mural of city landmarks which changes colors at intervals and a liberty torch with fan-shaped deco columns. The Sony Star Southfield multiplex was improved by the creation of a facade with a deco sculpture and by making the lobby appear like 'Hollywood Boulevard' with restaurants, stage-set shops and a giant popcorn concession stand.
