Characterization and breakdown of self-incompatibility in field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis L.)
Article Abstract:
The self-incompatibility system at work in the bindweed, Convolvulus arvensis, was characterized and a method for self-pollination developed to produce plants suitable for the investigation of the genetics of glyphosate response in this weed. Results indicate that localized high-temperature treatment is an effective and efficient method of self-crossed seed production. The seed production using this technique is comparable to that of out-crossed plants. Further, seeds of selfed plants have a high level of fitness compared to out-crossed plants.

The genetics of self-incompatibility in the genus Schlumbergera (Cactaceae)
Article Abstract:
The genetics of self-incompatibility (SI) in Schlumbergera Lemaire was analyzed. Self-incompatibility was defined as a genetically controlled mechanism that prevents fertilization in fertile hermaphroditic plants when they are crossed to another plant with the same incompatibility phenotype. All crosses were found consistent with a one-locus, multiallelic SI system under gametophytic control. The first SI inheritance for the Cactacea family was reported.

From the classroom to the literature in genetics instruction
Article Abstract:
A series of computer library exercises were presented to enable students to become familiar with the physical layout of the building as well as facilitate location of periodicals inside the library. The rest of the exercises aims to concentrate on the structure and content of selected primary and review articles. The exercises were also designed to produce instructional materials by manipulating the literature collection as a computer database.
