Is This Any Way to Run an Olympics?
Article Abstract:
The Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee (LAOOC) is trying to raise revenues with sponsors. The sponsors will be 'official' Olympic representatives, able to use that title in their advertising campaigns. In order to be awarded their official status, they each had to guarantee at least four million dollars in goods and services to LAOOC. The LAOOC is an independent, nonprofit organization, responsible for organizing and funding the summer Olympic games in Los Angeles. Unlike past years, the Olympics have been costly to host cities because they are involved in building new facilities for the games. The LAOOC intends to avoid new construction wherever possible. Some criticism has been leveled at the LAOOC, because events are in rather far flung places. The committee's objective to raise enough money to have a profit it can distribute to athletic organizations.

Bad Show
Article Abstract:
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is heavily in debt. The center has never made a payment on the special bonds the United States Department of the Treasury holds. It remains unlikely that the center will ever pay the bonds off. Title to the center is held by the United States Department of the Interior. Some Congressional action is needed to resolve this funding dilemma. The center believes that if Congress would retire the debt, it would be able to raise private funds for operation.
