Pa. top in chips? It's in the bag; production here leads U.S. and while Frito-Lay has its eyes on domination, many area brands are thriving
Article Abstract:
Pennsylvania leads the U.S. in potato chip production, ahead of Texas, where Frito-Lay is headquartered, and California. The U.S. Department of Agriculture will not give a precise number for Pennsylvania's share of chip production, but says Pennsylvania contains more potato chip entrepreneurs than other states. Six regional potato chip companies--Herr's, Utz, Martin's, Bon Ton, Beckel's, and Snyder's of Hanover--are headquartered in southeast Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania also contains about 20 smaller potato chip companies.
