Seven-digit dialing going the way of the rotary phone
Article Abstract:
A new 10-digit dialing system will be introduced in December 1998 in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The system requires customers to dial 10-digits to make a phone call locally. Customers will have to start using the system by June 1999. Many experts assert that Southeastern Pennsylvania could have postponed the arrival of the system if rival phone firms in the state had reached a compromise on how to divide the thousands of phone numbers that were designated to them. In May 1998, the PUC decided to establish new area codes in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The decision of the commission was supported by telephone companies.
