Too good to believe
Article Abstract:
Armco, a Pittsburgh, PA-based stainless steel producer, is optimistic about the prospects of its 300-pound stainless steel frame that is lighter, more ductile and less expensive to manufacture. The company and its partner, Autokinetic, was able to come up with a stainless steel car frame that is cheaper to produce by designing one that is easier to make, contains less steel and less wasteful. Additional savings come from the fact that stainless steel is corrosion-resistant while carbon steel requires a zinc coating. Later in 1998, Armco and Autokinetic will present to an unnamed car maker partner a final report on the frame, including computer-simulated safety data. The partner would then determine whether to build a prototype.
