Listening to the community of the hearing-impaired
Article Abstract:
The deaf do not consider their inability to hear a drawback for they have developed a unique culture and are safely ensconed in their world. To reach out to the deaf and help them secure a job, an understanding of their world is necessary. They communicate by American Sign Language (ASL), writing, lip reading, and speech. Deaf people communicate with one another without inhibition. The University of North Texas (UNT) offers interpreters and assistance to help the deaf find a job. Arizona State University (ASU) offers a different program for the deaf in their Disabled Student Resources (DSR) program. Technology is essential in reducing the barriers between those who are deaf and those who are not.
