An approach for assessment of the hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity of charged polymers
Article Abstract:
Experiments were performed to evaluate the counterion activities in charged polymer suspensions and their water sorption properties. The hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity of linear polyelectrolytes were examined. Factors that influence the conversion of the polyelectrolytes from hydrophilic to hydrophobic states were identified. The substitution of sodium ions by tetraalkylammonium counterions and the removal of water from the charged polyion domain contribute to this conversion. Moreover, the size of the Donnan potential and its influence on hydrophilicity were examined.

Thermally induced supertrap formation
Article Abstract:
Phosphorescence spectroscopy was used to investigate the triplet energy migration in the poly[(9-phenanthrylmethyl methacrylate)-co-(methyl methacrylate) film. Simulation of the phosphorescence decay profiles of the film with and without a triplet energy acceptor showed that its concentrations of the supertrap can be assessed in the temperature range 30-100 K. The supertrap concentration was found to sharply rise with the motion of the matrix polymer.
