Physisorption and chemisorption of alkanethiols and alkyl sulfides on Au(111)
Article Abstract:
The energetics and kinetics of the adsorption of different kinds of sulfur-containing hydrocarbons onto Au(111) were investigated via helium beam reflectivity and temperature-programmed desorption methods. Simple alkanethiols including dialkyl sulfides, dialkyl disulfides and other sulfur-containing organics were observed to adsorb with a low coverage physisorption enthalpy approximately 20% greater than the heat of vaporization in the bulk.

Linear dichroism measurements on oriented purple membranes between parallel polarizers: contribution of linear birefringence and applications to chromophore isomerization
Article Abstract:
A new method for orienting purple membranes that is analogous to the compression of gels in two directions produces a negative second order parameter. The approach was used to examine the changes in the angle between the electronic transition dipole moment and the orientation axis during chromophore isomerization. The measured birefringence changes and computations from absorption and anisotropy changes prove the feasibility of the method.

Indentation analysis of linear-chain hydrocarbon monolayers anchored to diamond
Article Abstract:
It has been possible to use classical molecular dynamics simulations to assess the indentation of monolayers made up of linear hydrocarbon chains with 8, 13 or 22 carbon atoms that are chemically bound, or anchored, to a diamond (111) substrate. It is clear that flexible capped nanotubes can be used to indent a range of softer substrates.
