Recognition of cations by self-assembled monolayers of crown ethers
Article Abstract:
An impedance spectroscopy study revealed that the binding of alkali metal ions to self-assembled monolayers of several crown ether adsorbates is influenced by the dielectric constant of the layer, resulting in an increase of the monolayer capacitance. The degree of the capacitive response was observed to associated to the structure of the used adsorbates. Longer adsorbates with an alkyl spacer exhibit a smaller response due to the invariant capacitance of the spacer.

Determination of the distance dependence and experimental effects for modified SERS substrates based on self-assembled monolayers formed using alkanethiols
Article Abstract:
The properties of modified surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates based on self-assembled monolayers formed using alkanethiols are studied. Results show that SERS sensitivity was determined by the association between the SERS interfacial distance dependence and a hydrophobic effect exhibited by the alkyl chain of the thiol. The value of the SERS electromagnetic enhancement was found to be 2.1 x 10(super 3).
