Solvent-dependent photophysics of 1-cyclohexyluracil: Ultrafast branching in the initial bright state leads nonradiatively to the electronic ground state and a long-lived [sup.1.n][pi.sup.*] state
Article Abstract:
The modified nucleic acid base, 1-cyclohexyluracil is examined by femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy in protic and aprotic solvents of varying polarity. The transient absorption signals reveal ultrafast branching in the initial bright state prepared by ultraviolet absorption, and while a fraction of the population decays through ultrafast internal conversion to [S.sub.0], a significant fraction of 40% decays to a dark [sup.1]n[pi.sup.*] state, which decays to [S.sub.0] on a slower time scale.

Alkyne creation in aliphatic polymers: Influence of side groups
Article Abstract:
Alkyl groups and allyl groups are selected to study the influence of side groups on terminal alkyne creation, in aliphatic polymers submitted to swift heavy ions, under vacuum. The effect of radiation-induced alkenes in the polyoelfins, on terminal alkyne creation, is less pronounced, but a clear reduction of the electronic stopping power threshold value is seen for C ion irradiations, at high doses.

Singlet oxygen chemistry in water: a porous Vycor glass-supported photosensitizer
Article Abstract:
The generation of singlet molecular oxygen by irradiation of meso-tetra(N-methyl-4-pyridyl)prophine adsorbed on porous Vycor glass is investigated. The excited state of the adsorbed complex is quenched by [O.sub.2] to give singlet oxygen, which is found in the surrounding aqueous solution.
