Ti(sub 1-x)Zr(sub x)O2 solid solutions for the photocatalytic degradation of acetone in air
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the Ti(sub 1-x)Zr(sub x)O2 solid solutions for the photocatalytic degradation of acetone in air. Some of the Ti4+ ions in an anatase lattice were substituted with Zr4+ to form Ti(sub 1-x)Zr(subx)O2 solutions. The solid solutions were, in turn, characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectrometry, BET surface area, zeta potential measurements and X-ray diffractometry. Results reveal that the increase in photocatalytic activity is related to changes in the lattice parameters and cell volume.

Orientation dependence of photochemical reactions on TiO2 surfaces
Article Abstract:
The photochemistry at rutile surfaces with discrete orientations was investigated by utilizing the photoreduction of silver ion to silver metal from an aqueous solution into the titanium dioxide (TiO2) surfaces. TiO2 rutile films of varied orientations exhibited photochemical activity in the silver ion photoreduction protocol. The (101), (111) and (001) rutile surfaces had higher photoreduction rates compared to the (100) and (110) rutile film orientations.

Genuine pyrimidine radical cations generated by radiation-induced electron transfer to butyl chloride or acetone parent ions
Article Abstract:
The electron transfer to parent ions of solvents of low polarity such as n-butyl chloride and acetone yields pyrimidine radical cations of methylated uracils and thymines. These radical cations display a transient tautomerism and exist in n-butyl chloride in the lactam and in acetone in a lactam-like form. They also exhibit kinetic and spectral properties that are much different from pyrimidine species formed in aqueous solutions.
