Glycobiology: toward understanding the function of sugars
Article Abstract:
Carbohydrates attached to proteins and lipids participate in fertilization, immune defense, parasitic infection, viral replication, disruption of blood clots, cell-cell adhesion, and cell growth. Conformations of the glycoproteins and glycolipids depend on the protein, its position, and the tissue and cellular environment. The majority of the proteins essential for biological activities are glycosylated. The level of glycosylation influences the nature of the glycoproteins, via modification in sugar structures. Interactions of animal tissues with oligosaccharides are discussed.
