Network System's Architecture Can Be Adapted to Meet Different Organizational Needs
Article Abstract:
The DeskNet-1 workstation is a part of a distributed processing system that includes an NCR mainframe as well as clustered and personal processors. It has the ability to process multiple applications simultaneously; a user can work on a spreadsheet and a query from the mainframe computer's database at the same time. Up to four application programs can be active concurrently at each workstation. Information storage is done at the mainframe while processing is distributed between the DeskNet-Node (a 68000-based processor), and the DeskNet-Workstation (a Z80-based 96K terminal). The approximate cost per user is $1,600.
