The Minicomputer: A Key to an Integrated OA Strategy
Article Abstract:
Minicomputers, defined as mid-range, multi-user computer systems, perform both conventional office support functions as well as specialized functions. At the intermediate level, between mainframe and personal computers, one of the minis' greatest benefits is the capability to provide centralized, rather than distributed, functions or services. Companies wanting to purchase a multi-user system can select from vendors selling only hardware or can choose a vendor supplying a completely integrated hardware and software system. IBM offers the IBM System-36 entry-level system that includes three software packages offering integrated office support. Digital Equipment Corp. provides the 'All-in-1' integrated office system that uses their VAX minicomputer. The Office Management Systems from Honeywell's Office Management Systems Division uses a proprietary operating system and software. Plexus Computers Inc. has a family of supermicrocomputers and offers third-party software and customized hardware. AT&T sells UNIX-based minicomputers that also support third-party software. For law offices, Barrister Information Systems sells the Barrister Law Office Management System, designed as an integrated minicomputer-based system. Photographs of several of these products are included, in addition to some points to consider before purchase and an in-depth definition of the minicomputer.

Participation: Individual Goals and Choices in Collective Action
Article Abstract:
Participation in decision making in the work place is a new concept, one that can be useful to business and a benefit to workers. Real participation means that the definition of management needs to be changed. Participation will be important in the future development of business, especially in light of the fast moving evolution of technology as applied to the work place. What will inhibit business in this new era of growth is the inability to coordinate systems and individuals. Technology may well curtail participation.
