Reclaiming the backlands
Article Abstract:
The redevelopment of existing housing estates could yield areas of land for new urban development. Such redevelopment could make a significant impact on the UK government's housebuilding targets and allow housing density in some areas to be doubled. Architectural firm Shillam and Smith has devised a plan to regenerate some 153 Victorian houses in Birmingham by demolishing 43 homes and releasing land to build 193 new homes, so doubling housing density. Total cost of the project will be 8 million pounds sterling.
