2 Chaparral execs granted immunity in $50M plea deal

Chaparral Boats Inc executives William S. Pegg and James A. Lane Jr, a board member of the National Marine Manufacturers Assn, were able to forged a deal with federal prosecutors regarding charges of drug smuggling. The deal, which was arranged by Pegg, resulted in the turning over of $50 million in drug money to a federal court in Macon, GA. Pegg, whose brother Joe is serving a 30-year sentence for drug smuggling, was also able to arrange for immunity for his family and his business partner, Lane.

Rising fuel prices: 'crummy' timing
Article Abstract:
Rising fuel prices have further aggravated the problems of a boatbuilding industry that is attempting to overcome the adverse impact of a sluggish national economy. Lake Erie Marine Trades Assn Pres Norm Schultz noted that significant increases in gas prices have hurt boat sales. On the other hand, a survey of a sample of industry leaders and marina operators found they were generally in agreement that consumers have not changed their boating habits despite complaining about high fuel prices.
