Article Abstract:
Quantity surveyors Currie and Brown have designed a software program, called Live Options, to help them with costing and designing a new project. They were assisted with the development of the program by Consultant Monoword and they obtained an architect's advice on the design part of the program.Currie and Brown employees have the software installed on their laptops which they can take to an initial meeting with clients. Users of the program have found it reduces the time spent on preparing and costing designs. It also allows information to be changed or updated and will cost new designs very rapidly.

Arranged marriages: why the City is forcing top contractors together
Article Abstract:
It is becoming increasingly common for UK construction contractors to consider merger deals. This trend is partly attributable to the downturn in the construction industry, but has also been fuelled by the fact that the market is becoming more global and increasingly dominated by long-term privately financed schemes. Contractors now realize that they must become larger if they are to survive. Many are coming under strong pressure from shareholders, who resent the fact that the value of construction firms has slumped significantly since the 1970s.

The outsider
Article Abstract:
Experience in the engineering construction industry and thirty years with petrochemical firm British Petroleum are the two main strengths of the new director of the Major Contractors Group (MCG), Bill Tallis. Re-structuring of the petrochemical industry in the early 1980s has given Tallis valuable knowledge of a procedure which must now be applied to the UK construction industry.
