54321: as the countdown to the launch of the UK's fifth terrestrial television channel comes to a head, contractor Kyle Stewart is racing to finish Channel 5's headquarters on time

Article Abstract:

Channel 5 will begin broadcasting on Easter Sunday, and preparations are underway by contractor Kyle Stewart to have the new London headquarters ready on time. Part owner, Pearson Television chose offices near to central London so that the amount of fibre-optic cabling required to link the studio to the Royal Mail's satellite dishes was reduced. A central broadcasting facility was required to co-ordinate and edit output, with smaller studios required for interviews. The project need major works and a second air conditioning system had to be installed specifically to cool the technical equipment.

QS awarded 9,000 pounds sterling compensation for sexual discrimination by contractor

Contractor Birse of Yorkshire, England, has been ordered to pay 9,000 pounds sterling compensation to quantity surveyor Clare Harrigan for sexual discrimination. Harrigan left the company before pursuing the claim as she believed she would be unable to progress there. Harrigan successfully proved discrimination, illustrated by the the fact that a male colleague who failed an examination that Harrigan had passed was promoted over her. Harrigan believes many contractors operate a supposed equal opportunities policy to gain eligibility to submit tenders for local authority contracts.

Gillespies team to design 470 million pound sterling Ford masterplan

Article Abstract:

A 470 million pounds sterling regeneration project has been unveiled for the run down area surrounding the Ford Motors' Dagenham factory site in east London. The new industrial estate will be landscaped by architect firm Gillespies, which has been commissioned to build a facility for the future. The site benefits from both excellent rail and road links, which Ford plan to use to build a Centre of Excellence and learning facilities, with investments of up to 300 million pounds sterling.
