A REIT potpourri
Article Abstract:
Chateau Communities (MHC) is the largest of the community real estate investment trusts (REITs), with 154 communities in 26 states as far as total 'owned portfolio' properties are concerned. In fact, as of mid-June 1999, MHC has the largest overall portfolio at 61,652. Meanwhile, when considering possible acquisitions, REITs consider a number of factors, including the location and type of property, value of homes located on leased land, landscape improvements, current and projected property cash flow, and potential for construction of new communities in the local market.

First quarter Allen REIT index update
Article Abstract:
The inaugural release of the Allen Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) Index has been well received by the industry and is in the process of evolving to serve the information needs of industry members and investors. One possible improvement to the index is the publication of the net operating income of baseline firms. Overall confidence in the industry by investors could also similarly be improved by the imposition of certification standards on half of the mid- to executive-level property management executives of each REIT.

Allen REIT index: is the honeymoon over?
Article Abstract:
Industry trends and substandard earnings are discouraging investors from purchasing real estate investment trusts (REITs). Experts contend that investors have overestimated earnings of REITs and have failed to provide for the adverse effects of a slowdown of the stock market which is vital to the performance of such investments. Analysts also caution investors to refrain from making purchases based on unrealistic pro forma statements which could lead to losses in the end.
