A look ahead: cooling urban heat islands
Article Abstract:
The phenomenon of urban heat islands is examined and its implications on the roofing industry are investigated. Urban heat islands refer to the higher average temperature in cities than in surrounding rural areas. The US Department of Energy reckons that the urban heat island effect adds about $4 billion the country's energy bill by way of air conditioning. To counter this effect, proposals are being advanced for roofing materials with higher reflectivity and emissivity.

Take advantage of cold applieds
Article Abstract:
Cold-applied roofing membranes offer convenience and safety and are free of flammable solvents, asbestos and odor. Cold- or ambient-applied roofing systems require little application equipment and is easily stored and delivered to the worksite. Set-up time is typically reduced because the pre-melting of bitumen is eliminated, which also reduces burn or fire hazards.
