Ameritech to close centers, prepares for merger
Article Abstract:
Ameritech Corp. of Chicago, IL, announced that it will shut down its call centers in Milwaukee, WI, and Lansing, MI, as part of a plan to reduce $3 billion in expenses through 2002. The shutdown also comes as the company prepares for the $62 billion proposed merger with SBC Communications Inc. of San Antonio, TX. The number of employees affected has not been determined. Ameritech, however, is offering employees the option to relocate to one of the 15 other centers in the firm's five-state region. The merger, meanwhile, will reportedly create a new telecommunications company with a national-local focus combined with national and international service capabilities.

Storage Co. ups business with central 800 numbers
Article Abstract:
Storage Trust Co., a provider of storage space with 230 stores nationwide, has signed on with Communication Service Center (CSC) of Margate, FL, to create an 800 number hotline that forwards calls directly to a central location. Before the program, calls were abandoned or missed when store managers were not available to answer the phone. Presently, the firm gets 7,000 new move-ins per month, with sales increasing 15% because of the program. Storage Trust intends to expand the program with CSC to allow agents to take credit-card reservations over the phone.
