Break with the past and with Parliament's palace
Article Abstract:
The Palace of Westminster is inadequate for the needs of a modern demoratic parliament. Althought its is a fine building and steeped in history, the Palace lacks space for all members of parliament. It's use, together with the emphasis on tradition and ceremony in parliamentary procedure gives a dangerous message to the country. Britian is in danger of dwelling too much on the past and not concentrating on the changes needed in society. A new, purpose-built parliament building would be both practical and symbolic.

Only a muted cheer to mark the death of MIRAS
Article Abstract:
The UK Chancellor Norman Lamont reduced mortgage interest relief at source (MIRAS) to 20% from 25% on Mar 16, 1993 as part of his Budget plan. This shows that the Conservative party is considering the demise of the tax relief. If MIRAS was redistributed housing subsidies for those in debt and near to repossession could be gained. Housing benefit and rent schemes need to be reformed to help those whose earnings have seriously decreased or those who are unemployed.
