Social housing: a change to survival of the fattest?
Article Abstract:
The government aims to increase social housing. However housing association government grants will decrease by 25% from 75% to 50%. Rents will be increased and associations will need to increase private finance. Rents have increased by 107% in between 1988 and 1992. Many households are unable to afford rent and will have to be financed by social security. The Housing Corporation fears that reduced grants will make private investment more risky. It wants to discourage smaller housing associations.

Energy-saving measures left out in the cold
Article Abstract:
The UK is behind most of Northern European countries in terms of energy efficiency. New 1993 building regulations have not increased U-values for floor and wall insulation. The imposition of value-added tax on domestic fuel in Apr 1994 means that housing needs to utilise energy more efficiently. Energy efficient housing need not be expensive. North Sheffield Housing Association has achieved 83% better energy efficiency by good design and insulation at a reasonable cost.
